Slug Generator

Turn a title into a clean, URL-safe slug: lowercase, hyphenated, and free of accents. Runs locally.

Slug

How it works

The text is normalized to separate accented letters from their base character, the accents are stripped, everything is lowercased, and any run of characters that isn’t a lowercase letter or digit becomes a single hyphen. Leading and trailing hyphens are trimmed.

Why slugs matter

A predictable, readable URL like /blog/cafe-culture is easier for people to read and share than an ID or an untouched title full of spaces and punctuation, and it avoids the encoding issues that spaces and special characters cause in a URL.

Uniqueness is up to you

This tool only cleans up the text — it doesn’t check whether the resulting slug is already used elsewhere. Two different titles can also produce the same slug once punctuation is stripped, so verify uniqueness against your own content before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to accented letters?

They are converted to their closest plain ASCII letter — for example é becomes e — rather than being removed or percent-encoded.

Why hyphens instead of underscores?

Hyphens are the de facto standard for URL slugs and are treated as word separators by most search engines, unlike underscores.
